class="elementor-widget-container">
In September of 2024, our family embarked on a little adventure, traveling from Boston to London. Although our time there was brief, it was filled with memorable experiences. One of the most impactful was our visit to St Dunstan in the East Church Garden.

Amid the towering skyscrapers, the ruins of this ancient parish church stand resilient. Originally built around 1100, the Church of St Dunstan suffered severe damage during the Blitz of 1941 in World War II. While the tower, steeple, and a few walls survived, the church was never rebuilt. Instead, the City of London transformed the remains into a public garden, preserving its history in a unique way.

Stepping into this quiet and hidden oasis from the bustling streets felt surreal. Passing through the stone archways, I was greeted not by a typical church interior but by a peaceful, intimate garden. The once-grand windows were now covered with moss and vines, framing the sky in a way that made the space feel both timeless and alive. After capturing a few photos, we sat on a stone bench and simply soaked in the serenity. Around us, others sat alone, reading, eating, or quietly scrolling through their phones. I couldn’t help but wonder if they worked nearby, using this hidden gem as a retreat during their breaks. What a perfect spot to escape the noise and busyness of the city.

Though we visited many iconic sights during our trip, this simple, quiet garden became one of my favorite experiences. It was deeply refreshing to pause and appreciate the history, beauty, and peace this place offered.

In a world that often pulls us toward excitement and constant motion, it’s easy to overlook the value of quiet moments. Yet, sometimes, the greatest refreshment comes not from the most thrilling experiences but from stepping back and finding stillness. Whether you’re navigating a season of busyness or stress, I encourage you to seek out your own “hidden garden”—a space where you can pause, reflect, and feel restored. There is beauty in simplicity, and sometimes, it’s in those moments of stillness that we find the most peace.

Have you ever gone through a season where your body seems to forget how to sleep? You fall asleep easily enough, but after just a few hours, you’re wide awake, and no matter how hard you try, sleep just won’t come. It feels as though your body has forgotten what to do. Of course, that’s not possible, but in those sleepless hours, it certainly seems that way.

You lie there, waiting. Maybe you try some deep breathing exercises, put on a boring TV show, or get up for a glass of milk or a snack. And then, when you try again, one of two things happens: either your mind finally lets go and you drift into peaceful sleep, or you lie there frustrated, wondering why you’re still awake.

This has been my reality for the past two weeks. What’s most frustrating is knowing that stress is to blame. The last few weeks have been filled with one stressful event after another. After several stressful events last week, this week began with the repeated jingling of a dog collar in the middle of the night—always a sign of an ear infection. The next morning, I discovered a puddle of water near the water softener in the basement, and later, I realized there was an issue with one of our vehicles.

None of these situations are earth-shattering on their own, but coming one after the other—right as I’m supposed to be preparing for a big family activity—has been overwhelming. It’s no wonder I haven’t been sleeping.

Lying down at night, not knowing whether sleep will come, can feel disheartening. It’s even more frustrating when you follow all the advice from the experts, yet the restlessness persists. Still, I try not to worry. I remind myself that this sleepless season won’t last. It will pass, and I will find sweet slumber again. I know this because I’ve been through it before. In fact, I started writing this post yesterday, and last night’s sleep was much better. Maybe I’ve finally turned a corner.

If you’re struggling with something right now, I encourage you not to worry. I know that’s easier said than done, but remember: every season comes to an end. Trials come and go. I pray that whatever challenge you’re facing today, you find the strength and comfort to face it with hope.

When I woke up on my birthday, I didn’t know how I’d spend the day. All I knew for sure was that I’d spend it with my sons. Beyond that, the day was a blank canvas. The weather forecast predicted rain was on the way. I had a choice to make: Should we venture out into the storm or stay home, letting the day pass quietly by? Should I seize the moment or let it slip through my fingers?

In a flash of inspiration, I remembered The Great Elephant Migration, an outdoor art exhibit featuring over 100 life-sized elephant sculptures was on display in Newport, Rhode Island, for the summer. It sounded interesting when I heard about it, but I never thought I’d see it. Despite the weather and the near certainty of getting soaked, I decided we’d go. As I suggested this plan to my sons, I felt a twinge of apprehension. What if it turned out to be a mistake?

The drive to Newport began under gray skies, and sure enough, part way there, the rain started. By the time we arrived, it was pouring. Armed with rain jackets and umbrellas, we made our way to the Cliff Walk, a scenic path along the coast. As we strolled, we paused to admire the waves crashing against the jagged rocks below. For a moment, we all stood in silence, transfixed by the scene before us.

We continued on our journey, rain still falling, until we reached our destination. There they stood—the elephants—in all their glory, strong and serene in the storm. As I stood next to these towering figures, I felt small, yet connected to the artistry before me. These sculptures, crafted from lantana camara, an invasive weed that threatens wildlife habitats, were a powerful reminder of resilience and transformation. The very material that typically represents destruction was now a symbol of strength and beauty.

Walking among the elephants was fun. By the time we returned to the car, our shoes were soaked, but no one was complaining. We ended the day with a delicious meal at a nearby restaurant. Despite the rain, we thoroughly enjoyed our day together. It’s one we’ll remember for years to come.

As I look back on this experience, I’m grateful I didn’t let the invasive weeds of doubt, fear, and apathy take root in my mind. I could have easily stayed home, letting the gloomy forecast dictate my choices. By choosing to step into the storm, I experienced something wonderful—a reminder that sometimes the most meaningful experiences come when we push past uncertainties.

Had it not been my birthday, I might not have even considered this outing. That’s unfortunate, but it’s true. How often do we let circumstances or feelings control our choices, allowing opportunities to pass us by? I suspect we all let weeds invade our habitats from time to time.

So, the next time you face uncertainty, remember the elephants standing strong in the rain. Don’t let the weeds of doubt hold you back. Look beyond your circumstances. You may be walking through a storm, but that doesn’t mean you won’t find joy in the midst of it. Take a chance, step into the rain, and see what beauty awaits you. You might just find it’s worth getting a little wet.

As I sipped my morning coffee and checked email, I glanced up at the local news program on my television. A graphic at the bottom of the screen caught my eye—a live poll asking whether people preferred summer or winter. Winter was leading by a good margin. Given the relentless summer heat wave we’re experiencing, I wasn’t surprised. I would have cast my vote for winter too.

One newscaster commented that people often say they prefer the opposite season to the one they’re in. So true. When you’re enduring the worst of one season, it’s easy to forget the worst of another. The same can be said for life.

When life gets hard, we often lose focus. We falsely assume the grass is greener elsewhere. We think if only we had this or that, or could be more like so-and-so, life would be easier. We fixate on what’s wrong instead of what’s right, the negative instead of the positive, and by doing so, we starve ourselves of joy.

Every season has its challenges, but also an abundance of blessings. However, we won’t notice or appreciate the blessings if we’re solely focused on the negative.

Years ago, I planted Echinacea seeds in an attempt to provide perennial flowers for pollinators. God blessed that effort, and each year I look forward to seeing the beautiful butterflies, hummingbirds, and bees that visit the purple flowers. It’s fitting that these plants seem at their best when summer feels its worst, and I least want to be in the garden. They bring a smile to my face and remind me, when I most need reminding, that there’s much to be thankful for.

So, the next time you’re longing for a different season—whether in nature or in life—I encourage you to take a moment to appreciate the unique blessings of the present. Embrace the beauty around you, and remember that every season has its own special gifts. By shifting your focus, you’ll find joy even in the midst of challenges.

Several years back, we converted a mostly unused playroom into a bedroom. We sorted through the mounds of toys, games, puzzles, Lego bricks, stuffed animals, and various random bits of the boys’ childhood that filled the room, placing the mass into bins, boxes, and bags to either keep, donate, or throw away.

Deciding that a broken toy belonged in the trash was easy, but choosing between keeping or donating a perfectly good toy was challenging, especially for me.

When I picked up a Rescue Heroes figure, I didn’t see a preschool toy. I saw my two little boys playing side by side, creating an action-adventure scene, and a younger version of myself joining the fun. I could hear the words and melody of the theme song from the Rescue Heroes videos we watched together back then.

Whether it was a Thomas train or a Pokemon toy, each item transported me to a cherished moment in the past. It was overwhelming. In the end, I kept the vast majority of the items, deciding to deal with them later.

Although the bedroom conversion happened years ago, I’m embarrassed to admit there’s still an area of our home cluttered with the boxed-up playroom. My delayed decisions then are a source of stress now. By not fully dealing with the task at hand, my past self actually punished my future self.

Decisions have consequences, and making decisions can be challenging. It’s very tempting to avoid them. Believe me, I know. But not making a decision has consequences too. Each choice you make, or don’t make, today affects your future. You can position yourself to grow or set yourself up to stumble. The choice is yours.

The next time you’re tempted to put off a decision because it feels uncomfortable, I encourage you to think about your future self. Be kind to that person. Make a choice today that you will be thankful for tomorrow.

In 2024, I traveled with my youngest son to Yosemite National Park. This trip was planned for 2023, but unexpected flooding forced the park to close just days before we were set to leave. Nevertheless, our delayed adventure was worth the wait as we were treated to awe-inspiring vistas and witnessed the power of roaring waterfalls. Truly, God’s creation is beautiful!

Navigating to the park each day from our hotel required a long drive on winding mountainous roads with surprisingly high speed limits. Along the roads I noticed numerous signs instructing slow-moving vehicles to use turnouts to allow other vehicles to pass. I believe the intent is to prevent backups and keep traffic flowing at the speed limit. However, it became obvious that some drivers were more eager than others. They’d drive up close behind me, obviously impatient to get around.

Since I preferred to keep to the speed limit, I quickly grew comfortable using the turnouts and used them frequently. Being mindful of the speed of any vehicles approaching from behind and looking for signs indicating the next turnout became second nature.

One time on the way back to our hotel, I noticed a UPS truck barrelling up behind us as we descended a hill. Thankful to see an upcoming turnout, I pulled off. The truck and the motorcycle behind it raced past and were soon out of sight.

We continued on our way at the speed limit and didn’t see another vehicle for many miles. As we rounded a bend, I was surprised at what I saw. It was the same UPS truck and motorcycle. We’d caught up to them. A slower car was traveling in front of the truck. I’m assuming it must have been there for a while and refused to pull over. But why?

Driving those roads reminds me of life. Each of us travels at our own pace, following the path set before us, accomplishing different things along the way. You don’t need to become anxious and move faster just because someone is speeding up behind you, nor should you stubbornly prevent others from moving forward. Sometimes the kindest thing we can do, for ourselves and for others, is simply to yield.

Letting others pass isn’t a sign of weakness, and it doesn’t diminish your journey. It’s an act of kindness, humility, and confidence in your own path. Someone else’s progress doesn’t make yours any less valuable. Concentrate on the pace that’s right for you.

May this story remind you to embrace your journey with patience, grace, and a willingness to yield when necessary. Together, let’s navigate life’s twists and turns with patience, courage, and a spirit of encouragement.

Whether you’re beginning your first year of homeschooling or your fifth, getting started and staying motivated can sometimes feel overwhelming. We often enter the year with high hopes and a long list of plans, imagining a perfect rhythm that rarely exists. Perhaps we sign our children up for every extracurricular activity that seems enriching, without realizing the time and energy they require. Or we fill every minute of the school day with lessons and worksheets, only to feel stressed when the day doesn’t unfold exactly as planned. Before long, we may abandon our carefully crafted schedule, feeling like we’re not doing enough, only to overcompensate later—and the cycle repeats.

At other times, the opposite can happen. We start without a plan or with minimal planning, hoping that things will naturally fall into place. Days go by, progress seems slow, and a sense of inadequacy creeps in. In response, we might overplan, adding more structure than we can realistically manage, which can bring its own stress.

So how do we get started and maintain motivation without falling into these extremes? I believe the answer is balance. Every family is unique, and finding the right rhythm takes observation, patience, and grace—both for yourself and for your children.

If this is your first year of homeschooling, be gentle with your expectations. You may not know yet how much work is too much or too little. Watch your children closely. How long can they focus before losing interest? Do they thrive with breaks, or does stepping away from a task make it difficult to refocus? In our family, once attention is lost, it’s challenging to regain it—but other families find that frequent breaks refresh their children and help them engage more fully. Each family is different, and it takes time to discover what works best for yours.

Even for experienced homeschoolers, ongoing observation is key. Children grow, interests shift, and abilities expand in ways that require flexibility. A workbook page that was perfect last year may now be too simple—or too dull. Conversely, just because a child has moved up a grade doesn’t always mean the assigned work matches their readiness. Every child learns at their own pace. Watch their reactions closely. Are they frustrated or inspired? If they’re excited by a challenge, encourage it. If they’re discouraged, adjust the lesson or return to it later. One of the greatest gifts of homeschooling is the freedom to adapt and respond to each child’s unique needs.

Staying motivated becomes much easier when you find the balance that fits your family. Avoid extremes: just because a plan feels off doesn’t mean it has failed. Give yourself permission to adjust. Small changes can create significant improvements in your days and in your children’s learning experiences.

Above all, remember that homeschooling is more than schedules and lesson plans. It’s a journey of love, patience, and guidance. Just as God teaches us to walk in faith one day at a time, He calls us to nurture and guide our children with wisdom and grace. Trust the process. Celebrate small victories. Extend yourself and your children compassion. And keep moving forward, confident that each day of learning and growing together is a gift.

The post It was a cold, dark, and dreary Saturday morning as I laced up my running shoes and headed out to my car to drive forty-five minutes to a 10k race. The predicted storm hadn’t yet hit, and I was hopeful it would hold off until after the event.

Unfortunately, about half-way there I encountered rain. Oh well, I thought, it wasn’t ideal, but I’ve run in the rain before. Arriving at the race venue with time to spare, I received an alert on my phone: a gale force wind warning. Even though I knew this race course was next to the Atlantic Ocean, I hadn’t fully grasped the storm’s potential impact for extreme wind until I stepped out of my car into the biting cold and fierce gusts.

Nevertheless, the race atmosphere was surprisingly upbeat. After gathering my race bib from the cheerful volunteers and making a quick stop at the porta potty, I opted to skip my usual pre-race warm-up and sought shelter in my car.

As I waited, I reflected on the challenges of my training leading up to this event and found myself strangely unfazed by the added challenge of the stormy conditions. In fact, I felt a curious anticipation to see how I’d fare amidst the tempest. I was actually looking forward to it.

The race kicked off with the emcee’s infectious energy setting a positive tone. Despite the weather’s best efforts, I maintained a steady pace through most of the race. It wasn’t until around mile five, when we turned into a headwind, that I truly understood the magnitude of the elements. It felt as though I was running in place, but instead of becoming frustrated, I kept laughing at the absurdity of it all. Relief flooded me as I finally reached the turnaround point, my personal “hallelujah” perhaps escaping my lips a bit too loudly.

With the toughest stretch behind me, the rest seemed easy. Crossing the finish line, I took some time to appreciate the beauty of the beach and the roaring waves, grateful for the opportunity to witness God’s creation in all its glory.

Unlike the wind alert, life’s storms don’t always come with warnings. They can hit when we least expect it. Regardless of the circumstances, there’s always an opportunity to find joy during trials. So, keep training hard, stay resilient, and embrace whatever weather comes your way. After all, it’s all part of the journey.

For a few months, I’ve been following an interactive digital 10k running plan on a fitness app. I thought it would be a refreshing change since I usually stick to paper plans downloaded online. Unlike the static training plans I’ve used before, where you can see the details of every workout ahead of time, this digital plan only shows one week at a time. It’s designed to adjust and keep you on track toward your goal as you progress through the training. Sounds great, right?

Well, it was… until it wasn’t. On Monday morning, I opened the app expecting to see the week’s workouts. Instead, I was met with a discouraging message: “It will be difficult to achieve your goal based on your training pace. I suggest training for a run or changing your race to a later date.” It may as well have said “give up” because that’s what my mind read. I was crushed.

Maybe if I’d received this message earlier, it wouldn’t have hit me so hard, but my race was three weeks away. I knew my training wasn’t quite up to par with the plan since I’d taken some time off from running after falling in January, and I hadn’t been able to achieve all the paces the app suggested. However, I was completing the workouts and thought I still had a chance. I guess not.

In hindsight, it’s kind of silly to let an app upset me. After all, it’s just an algorithm based on limited data. I don’t think this type of training plan is right for me, anyway. After each workout, it essentially grades your performance with either a “good job” message or a “room to grow” notification. Too often, I found myself seeking validation from those “good job” messages and feeling defeated when I didn’t receive them. I realized I was no longer running for joy; I was running for a little message on a screen to tell me I’d done well. But why did I think I needed that?

It’s tempting to seek validation from external things, especially technology, but I don’t need an app or anything else to give me value or predict my capabilities. My journey isn’t defined by algorithms. God alone knows how I’ll perform on race day, and every other day. I’ll try my best and leave the rest to Him. Whatever obstacles you’re facing today, I encourage you to do the same.

Each winter, I engage in a ritual of sorting through any seed packets remaining from the previous planting season. As I compile a list of seeds and their quantities, I reflect on what grew well in years past and what didn’t. For those that didn’t, I ponder whether to compost them or give them another chance.

Some say that repeating the same action and expecting a different result is a sign of insanity. Why invest time and effort in seeds that failed to flourish before? Is it madness to sow them again?

The answer lies in the dynamic nature of life. It’s not irrational to try again because every year is different. Variables like weather, soil conditions, pests, personal time and commitment, and unexpected challenges can alter the outcome. This growing season may resemble last year or be completely different, but it won’t be identical.

Our lives are similar. We are constantly changing. You’re not the same person today as you were 10 years ago, last year, last week, or even yesterday. We’re continually learning, growing, and adapting.

Despite this, we sometimes use the proverbial definition of insanity as a justification to give up. Why try something again when it didn’t work last time?

History is full of individuals who failed repeatedly and kept trying. A quick exploration of names such as Abraham Lincoln, Thomas Edison, or Walt Disney reveals their resilience in the face of setbacks. Consider the impact if they’d given up prematurely.

Past failures don’t necessarily dictate future outcomes. Just because something didn’t work for you before, that doesn’t mean it won’t work now. Life unfolds in perfect synergy with God’s timing. His plan’s in motion. You can’t see the steps, but that doesn’t mean you should give up and stop trying to step forward.

<div
