Walking on Thin Ice: Finding Hope in Stressful Seasons

On my morning walk, I found myself carefully dodging patches of thin ice. What had been small puddles during a recent rainstorm had transformed into frozen obstacles overnight. On one such puddle lay a single leaf, frozen in place. Staring at it, I realized it mirrored how I’ve been feeling lately. With so many random stressors weighing on my mind, it’s as if I’m standing on thin ice, holding my breath and waiting for the inevitable crack. Can you relate?

There are seasons in life when stress trickles in so subtly you hardly notice it. And then there are those times when it piles up relentlessly—one thing after another after another—until there’s no room left for anything else. It’s overwhelming, and it can feel like the slightest misstep will send everything crashing down.

But as I walked, stepping carefully around those frozen patches, I was reminded of an important truth: this time of stress is just a season, and like all seasons, it will pass. Sure, more challenges will come, but those won’t last forever either. And in between the storms, there will be seasons of peace and rest to restore us.

As Christmas approaches, I can’t help but think of the thin ice that Mary and Joseph must have felt beneath their feet. With no place to stay and a baby about to be born, their journey to Bethlehem must have been filled with uncertainty and stress. Yet, in the midst of that chaos, the Prince of Peace entered the world. His arrival was a reminder that even in the most challenging seasons, God’s presence brings hope, comfort, and joy.

If you’re feeling like you’re walking on thin ice today, know that you’re not alone. Just as winter eventually gives way to spring, this season will also pass. In the meantime, I encourage you to take small steps forward and find moments of stillness, where God’s peace can meet you right where you are. Christmas is a season that reminds us of His unshakable love and the gift of hope He offers, even in our hardest moments.

May you find comfort in knowing that thin ice doesn’t last forever and that the Prince of Peace walks with you, every step of the way.
