As I gazed out my window in the early morning light, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of awe at the sight before me. There, perched atop our chicken coop, was a majestic hawk, surveying its surroundings with keen eyes. Since I had not yet ventured out to open the coop door to the pen, the chickens were safe inside their home, completely unaware of the danger that loomed above them.
Marveling at the powerful predator, I wondered how many dangers linger beyond our sight. How many threats surround us every day? What hazards could be waiting just around the bend? It’s a frightening thought to contemplate!
Then I remembered the devotion I had read only minutes earlier. Ironically, it was about worry. We often needlessly burden ourselves with worry. We let stress about future events that may never come to pass, keep us from focusing on the moment we’re in.
The chickens inside the coop were oblivious to the hawk’s presence. They weren’t squawking or making a fuss like they do when a predator is near. They were going about their daily routine as if nothing was amiss, calm and secure in their surroundings.
Dare I say that we should be more like those chickens? Obviously, we need to be wise about protecting ourselves from danger, but we can’t let fear control us. Worry is a thief. It steals our peace and robs us of joy. I encourage you to let go of worry this month, embrace the present, and be thankful for the gift that it is.
