Thankful for Grace: Reflections from a Visit to a Recovery Center

This month, some ladies from our church and I had the opportunity to visit a women’s Christian recovery center. This residential program offers those struggling with addiction a chance to start over. The women come from diverse backgrounds, each carrying her own unique story. Yet, one thing unites them all: a desperate need for help and hope.

As we toured the facility, the center’s leader shared details about their approach. One aspect that stood out to me was the emphasis on structure. The residents follow set schedules, abide by clear rules, and fulfill specific responsibilities. Every day begins with chores and exercise—no coffee until those tasks are done! I’m not sure which impressed me more: the discipline this routine instilled or the immaculate condition of the enormous house.

The program includes a structured curriculum with designated times for classes. There are also set times for crafts, meal preparation, and personal reflection. The leader mentioned repeatedly how essential this framework is for recovery. For these women, structure provides a foundation. But, rules and routines alone aren’t enough to bring healing. True recovery requires a change of heart.

At the core of this program is the belief that healing comes through a restored relationship with God. These women, having reached rock bottom, recognized their need for a Savior. They couldn’t rebuild their lives on their own, but God led them to this place and is using it to transform them. Their gratitude was palpable. One resident joked about sweeping floors that already seemed spotless, but she made it clear how thankful she was for the opportunity to be there and to start anew.

As Thanksgiving approaches, it’s a perfect time to reflect on the blessings in our own lives. I’m especially grateful for the people God has placed in my path over the years—those who provided structure, guidance, and encouragement when I needed it most. Without my faith and their support, my story could have taken a very different turn.

Perhaps you can relate. Maybe you’ve experienced seasons when life felt out of control, and God brought people or circumstances to help guide you back. Or maybe you’re in a season now where you feel overwhelmed, longing for a fresh start. Wherever you are, remember that God specializes in redemption. Just as He’s transforming the lives of the women at the recovery center, He can work in our lives, too—bringing hope, healing, and purpose.

This Thanksgiving, take a moment to thank God for the people, routines, and even the challenges He’s used to shape your journey. And if you find yourself feeling lost or in need of direction, remember: you don’t have to navigate it alone. There’s always hope, and it begins with trusting Him.
