Faith, Family, and Fun: Homeschooling Through the Holidays

Note: This is a revision of a post I first published in 2015. My kids have since successfully completed their homeschool education.

The holiday season often sweeps by in a blur, packed with activities and events that seem to fill every moment. For many homeschooling families, traditional schoolwork takes a back seat until January. Instead of sticking to assignments, time is spent crafting gifts, preparing special meals, and celebrating Christmas traditions. But is that okay? Should we feel guilty for taking a break from homeschooling to focus on the holidays?

This is a question only you can answer, but if you’re uncertain, it’s worth reflecting on what homeschooling means to you.

Every family’s homeschooling journey is unique, but most would agree that one of the core reasons to homeschool is to strengthen the bond with our children while teaching them in a nurturing environment. So, how can we deepen that bond? How can we show our children that we love them? One meaningful way is by spending quality time together during the holiday season.

John 3:16 reminds us of God’s love—He loved us so much that He sent His son. This is a season worth celebrating! When you break from the norm to engage in special holiday activities, you’re telling your children that this time of year is important—and so are they. God loves them, and so do you! Math can wait while there are cookies to bake and memories to create. Of course, if you want to, you could work in some fractions while baking or add creative writing to card-making sessions. But keep the focus on fun.

Homeschooling is more than just school at home. It’s about coming together as a family, learning, supporting each other, and building a bond that will last. It gives your children the strength to go into the world and fulfill God’s purpose.

So, don’t let the holidays rush past without truly connecting with your children. You don’t need to do everything or overwhelm yourself with endless activities. Sometimes, less is more. Take time to share this wonderful season together. You’ll be glad you did.
