Have you ever watched a video of salmon swimming upstream against the current? These fascinating fish overcome incredible obstacles to travel to a place that’s ideal for their offspring. Amazing!
Recently, someone asked me what I was going to do now that my youngest son has graduated and I’m finished with homeschooling. I joked that I should have a retirement party. After all, my job is done.
You may wonder what this has to do with fish. Well, I was reflecting on homeschooling and suddenly the image of salmon swimming upstream came to mind. Homeschooling is like those salmon. It’s going against the current and purposely choosing to do something that’s difficult because you feel it will lead to the best experience for your kids. Just like with the salmon, there are obstacles along the way. These include judgment from others who don’t understand homeschooling, financial burdens from purchasing curriculum and supplies, and emotional stress from trying to teach your kids well and keep them motivated to learn.
Even though homeschooling was challenging, I don’t regret it. In my heart, I still feel it was the right choice for our family, and I’m thankful for the many blessings it provided. My encouragement to you is to go in the direction where you feel led even if it seems difficult. Sometimes you need to swim against the current to get to the place you’re meant to go.
